change and comfort

Change is hard. That’s why people won’t choose to change until they are so uncomfortable with their current situation that the changing feels easier than the staying-the-same.

I think about this a lot in regards to climate change. It is not yet uncomfortable enough to force the vast majority of us to change our habits that are killing the planet. And I don’t think it will become environmentally uncomfortable enough for us (in the countries who are the primary drivers behind climate change) until it is too late.

But, there is another kind of discomfort– social. You become like the people you are around. It starts with a few outliers, but the more people that care and show up– the higher likelihood that others will care and show up. It will become more comfortable to live a lifestyle that values the planet than it will to do the opposite. At least, that is the hope.
