expected versus reality

Today I noticed a connection between the Latin American colonial cities and the the agenda of the crusaders. Both had religious origins, or Christian origins to be specific. The music for both cities was often tied to dissemination of religious propaganda. Both groups of people had a high desire for order and harmony that stemmed from ancient thought.

They believed that everything should be harmonious, orderly and beautiful. And the way in which they saw the world reflected that belief. Not without discongruence, though.

900 years ago we (Western world) wanted the world to be beautiful in its simplicity, the earth is a circle. The Holy City is at the center of the world. Simple ideas, but not true or accurate.

Do we look for beauty in the world the same way today? Hellbent that the external meet the internal that we miss the entire point? Or miss the truth?
